Griffon vulturesonline
Four griffon vultures were fitted with GPS satellite transmitters at the Lago di Cornino vulture station in order to continue monitoring this species of vulture. The objective is to generate additional data about forays and the use of space by griffon vultures and the relationships between its breeding grounds in Croatia and Friuli and its summering grounds in Hohe Tauern. This is also an example of the importance of international collaboration in relation to protecting vultures.
The satellite transmitters are fitted like a rucksack using elastic bands, a system that has been used successfully on the project for reintroducing bearded vultures to the Alps and has proven to be animal-friendly. The very efficient, solar operating satellite transmitters transmit their GPS position via the GSM network and provide up to 500 different positions per day.
The travels of the griffon vultures can be tracked online on maps, which only show one location per day with a 24-hour time lag for protection reasons. If you click the location, you will receive information about the date and time of that position. The coloured lines directly link successive positions. The data is then updated when new data is sent from the transmitters via SMS.
